09/07/2004 Archived Entry: "Kelley's book"

I have been reading about the hotly anticipated new book by the slash-and-burn gossip maven Kitty Kelley, whose work always seems to cause a media storm and to reach the NYT's top ten. The book, which is coming out on September 14th with an initial press run of 1/2 million copies, is entitled "The Family: The Real Story of the Bush Dynasty."

The promo reads, "If you want to know the history of the Bushes -- the marriages, the affairs, the money, the wars, the lies ... if you want to know the truth - then you must read The Family." Rumor has it that Kelley got Sharon Bush, the ex-wife of Neil -- George W's wayward brother -- to spill big time. According to one blogspot, the book "reveals alleged sex offenses against minors by Dubya's father...the use of the White House by male hookers under Dubya....crooked business deals by every member of the Bush clan, including the oh-so-holy first lady, Laura Bush...how Dubya has had a very special friend in the mayor of a Tennessee city, who has has cohabited the Texas ranch many times...some surprising medical details about Dubya, including an explanation of why he is so burnt out." By contrast, NewsMax calls Kelley's revelations "thin gruel" and claims that Sharon Bush mysteriously clammed up after her divorce settlement with Neil was hiked. Frankly, if all the scandals listed on the blogspot are included in the 700+ paged book, it may be so far over the top that no one will take it seriously. But, what the hey, maybe everyone will stop talking about Kerry's war record at long last. Whatever happens, you've gotta admire Kelley chutzpah. MSNBC reported, "Author Kitty Kelley is touting her latest title in enemy territory. A full-page ad for "The Family: The Real Story of the Bush Dynasty" is appearing in today's Republican National Convention Guide, which is distributed to 20,000 conventioneers, staff and others." (BTW, the cheapest I've seen the book for sale is at Sam's Club for $18.44. I think list price is $29.95.)
