MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!
In honor of the 3rd Lord of the Rings movie, discover your hobbit name and, then, your elfish one. My names are, respectively, Iris Bulge of Hobbiton and Eldárwen Arcamenel.
In keeping with the spirit of the day -- and I do *love* Christmas -- I am blogging in a lighter vein, with only cartoons as political commentary.
For an interesting take on culture, I recommend Nick Gillespie's "The Perpetual Meaning Machine." As for the culture redefining itself or, at least, acknowledging redefinition...Lenny Bruce has received the first posthumous pardon in New York state's history. The Newsday article describes Bruce as "the Long Island-born, obscenity-slinging comic icon of the 1960s, [who] became a free-speech hero Tuesday when Gov. George Pataki" pardoned him. Wrong. He was already a free speech hero or else Pataki wouldn't have stood up to oh-so-bravely bask in Bruce's reflected glory by admitting the state was wrong in just about killing the man for speaking words. (Some still believe Bruce's overdose was police-induced.) Hmm...so much for my promise of no political commentary.
Promised Cartoons: Stuart Carlson's "Godfather IV"; and, Dan Wasserman's "Uncooperative Prisoner".
Best to all,
mac
